TT55 Ramose

The Tomb of Ramose, 'Govenor of the Town and Vizier' under Amenophis III and Amenophis IV, is famous for its highly elegant bas-reliefs.

Situated at te food of the Sheikh Abd al-Qurna hill, the tomb of Ramose is the largest in the entire necropolis.

Since Ramose was Vizier (similar to a modern-day prime minister), he had to follow Amenophis IV (Akhenaten/Echnaton) to his new court at Amarna, and his tomb remained unfinished and was never used by its owner.

The Vestibule is the only decorated part of the tomb, which has the typical inverted 'T' plan, but differs from all the others in its unusual size.

The impressive hypostyle hall has 32 columns supporting its ceilin, as well as reliefs of the outstanding artistic quality and refinement that are stylistically similar to the decoration in the nearby tomb TT57, belonging to the royal scribe Khaemhat.
