Important Information Luxor
Dear visitor,
First we would like to thank you for your interest in us, and in Luxor!
We have been active for many years in Luxor, and we love this city and country.
It is difficult for us to familiarize you with the information below, but we want to uphold our reputation as an independent center for tourists in Luxor. Now you say, independent? Yes, though we would like you to use our services, there are more important things, for example just to make sure tourist come back again. (many egyptians do not understand this kind of business.)
If you have problems or questions when you are in Luxor, you can always come to us and we will help you as much as possible without any cost for you.
The revolution passed Luxor in peace. A little quiet, even the 1st 4 months little to no tourists came to Luxor.
Yet there are things that changed. Before the revolution the Tourist Police was very (too) severe in upkeeping the law and preventing harassment for tourist. This is no longer the case. And because of the bad season (2011 till now), people don't have money anymore in our city. Harassment of tourists for example by carriage ride or things like that are considerably worse then before.
READ THOUGH: Luxor is safe, and crime is small to none, much less than for example what you can experience when you go to a cinema in the Netherlands, however, harass, or paying too much is happening a lot.
Therefore we would like to point out the following;
The Coachmen will push you to pay to mutch, or just demanding you go by calesh and not by foot. A normal ride (one hour) is normally for 20EGP (€ 2.50) but now they ask sometimes 20 UK pounds or Euros. And they can be quite annoying. Say the Make a fixed price therefore in Egyptian pounds well before you go. Know where you want to go. An example of today's example: A tourist wanted to the souk ... this was approximately 500mtr from him (he did not know this) the calesh went 15km detour.
The Faluca (sailboats) similar to above: Say the price is in Egyptian pounds! And don't bother with that after they want more.. they always pay more... don't pay any attention to their complains!
Children who sell handkerchiefs: 0.5 EGP
Taxis in Luxor: daytime: 10EGP / evening 15EGP
Karnak & Movenpick additional 10 EGP
We apologize that we had to inform you:
but we just want you to enjoy your vacation and tell this to your friends so we get more tourists!
Sincerely,
Alexander van Linschoten
